While executive coaches routinely give behavioural feedback to their clients, few ask them to reciprocate. This is a missed opportunity, not only in relation to coaches’ professional development, but also towards the improvement of coaching outcomes. This session will present the doctoral research process that I undertook to develop a client behavioural feedback instrument for the executive coach. I will present my key findings and their implications for the theory and practice of executive coaching, and also how they have impacted me as a coaching practitioner and supervisor. This session will benefit executive coaches by increasing their understanding and critical perspective about the sources of knowledge behind the competency models that they use to deliver coaching. It will trigger coaches’ self-reflexivity about the way they view their relationships with their clients, particularly in relation to coaching expertise. Coaching supervisors will benefit by reflecting about the role and nature of client data in their discussions with their supervisees. Finally, the session will benefit researchers and practitioners interested in research, as I will share my experience using a mixed-methods approach, and the challenges and opportunities I faced along the way.
